Stocks hit 2010 low

After ending last week on one of the worst days of the year, the Dow took another triple-digit loss and closed at a 2010 low on Monday. The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 115.48 points to close at 9816.49, while the Nasdaq Composite dropped 45.27 points to close at 2173.90.

Losses were sharp, especially among industrials, which fell 2.6%, while tech stocks loss 1.9% . Their weakness weighed heavily on the Nasdaq and caused it to underperform the other headline indices for the entire session.

At the Open

U.S. markets opened slightly higher but failed to hold on to gains in early trading. Reassurance from Fed Chairman Bernanke that a double-dip recession is not likely since economic conditions continue to improve at a moderate pace had little impact on market sentiment as gold futures cruised past a settlement record on Tuesday, spurred by continued fears about prospects for a worldwide slide into a recession. August delivery Gold, which is the most active contract added $3.70, or 0.3%, to $1,244.60 an ounce. Gold settled at $1,243.10 on May 12.

DuPont should be one of the issues moving the larger indices. DuPont (DD 34.40, +0.31, +0.91%) said Tuesday the United States Department of Agriculture approved its Plenish high oleic soybean for cultivation in the United States.

Announces $107 Million Texas Highway Contract
