Stocks are giving back some of the previous day’s big gains as consumer spending dips
Personal spending fell 0.5 percent in September, the Labor Department reported Friday, in line with forecasts. That follows a 1.3 percent jump in August fueled by the government’s popular Cash for Clunkers car rebate program.
The market is paying close attention to indicators of consumer spending, which is still in a slump despite improvements in other parts of the economy such as manufacturing and housing. Spending by consumers makes up a major part of the U.S. economy.
The Dow Jones industrials jumped nearly 200 points on Thursday following a strong report on gross domestic product growth in the third quarter, but many economists worry that much of that growth came from government stimulus measures and that weak spending by consumers will continue to hold the economy back.

Investors have spent the past couple of months hunting for clues of just how much the economy has recovered. Thursday’s gross domestic product reading gave them the surest sign yet that the economy is on the upswing.
The Commerce Department said the economy grew at an annual pace of 3.5 percent in the third quarter, faster than the 3.3 percent increase predicted by economists polled by Thomson Reuters.

Stocks plunge on disappointing manufacturing data
A surprise drop in a key regional economic indicator sent stocks reeling in early trading Wednesday, with the Dow Jones industrials tumbling more than 100 points.
The Chicago Purchasing Managers Index fell to 46.1 in September rather than rising to the 52 that economists expected. The index, considered a precursor to the national Institute for Supply Management index to be released on Thursday, pointed to a Midwestern manufacturing sector than is weaker than had been expected.

Stocks are sharply higher as investors feel optimistic about corporate takeovers
Stocks are up sharply in the early going Monday after Abbott Laboratories said it would buy the pharmaceutical business of Belgian chemicals maker Solvay for $6.6 billion and Xerox Corp. agreed to acquire Affiliated Computer Services for about $6.4 billion.
The takeover moves are a welcome sign that businesses have enough faith in a recovery in the economy to pursue acquisitions.
A rise was to be expected Monday after the stock market’s latest rally stalled in response to disappointing housing and manufacturing data. Investors are trying to decide whether it’s wise to commit much money to the market while the economic recovery looks more tentative.

Stocks are mixed amid weaker-than-expected durable goods and housing report
Stocks are mixed in early trading after a weaker-than-expected report on durable goods orders and a report that new home sales edged higher in August but fell short of economists’ expectations touched off new worries about the strength of a recovery in the economy.
Investors were disappointed to hear that durable goods orders unexpectedly fell in August. The second drop in three months shows any rebound in manufacturing is likely to be slow.

Stocks are lower after release of worse-than-expected economic forecast
The Conference Board says its index of leading economic indicators increased 0.6 percent in August, slightly less than the 0.7 percent increase expected by economists. Still, it marked the fifth straight month of gains in the index.
News of Dell Inc.’s plans to buy information technology company Perot Systems Corp. for about $3.9 billion did little to invigorate investors who have taken stocks up more than 50 percent since early March.
The benchmark Standard & Poor’s 500 index tacked on a 2.5 percent gain last week, bringing its total rise since March to 58 percent, after Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke declared the U.S. recession was “likely over.” Investors are now waiting to see what the rest of the Fed has to say this week during its two-day rate-setting meeting, which begins Tuesday.
In early trading, the Dow Jones industrial average fell 62.05, or 0.6 percent, to 9,758.15. The Standard & Poor’s 500 index lost 7.44, or 0.7 percent, to 1,060.86, while the Nasdaq composite index fell 8.71, or 0.4 percent, to 2,124.15.
