Stocks are lower amid concerns about a growing trade dispute between the U.S. and China

Overseas markets also fell sharply Monday on concern about tensions between two of the world’s largest economies.

Late Friday, the U.S. administration imposed trade penalties on tires coming into the country from China. The Chinese government quickly condemned the move and filed a complaint with the World Trade Organization, calling it protectionist and a violation of global trade rules.

President Barack Obama has until Thursday to accept, reject or modify a U.S. International Trade Commission ruling that an increase of Chinese tires moving into the U.S. hurts American producers.

Stocks move lower amid weakness in overseas markets and concerns about consumer spending

Stocks fell in early trading Wednesday, following the lead of overseas markets. The Shanghai stock market dropped 5 percent on concerns about a sustainable economic recovery in China, and the major indexes in Europe are all lower.

Investors are still battling concerns about consumer spending that have stalled stocks’ summer rally. Hewlett-Packard Co. on Tuesday became the latest big company to report ongoing weakness in sales that sent its profit down 19 percent in the latest quarter.

Crude Oil Falls Sharply at Open

September crude oil was chopping around the flat line overnight between approximately $70.50-71.25. However, minutes after the open of floor trading, crude fell sharply from the unchanged line, falling below the $70 level to lows of $69.05 per barrel. Currently, crude is trading 2.1% lower at $69.12 per barrel.

Natural gas traded in positive territory, just above the flat line, in overnight trading, but fell sharply at the open into negative territory to lows of $3.535. Natural gas is currently 2.2% lower at $3.56.

Stocks are slightly lower ahead of upcoming Fed report and retailer earnings reports

Stocks are trading modestly lower as investors look to the retail sector and the Federal Reserve for signs of how the economy is faring.

Overseas, Asian markets rose, while European markets traded lower.

The market has rallied amid continued signals that the recession is easing. Investors will be looking to earnings reports this week from retailers to determine how consumers are faring.

A Fed meeting later in the week could also provide insight into potential indications of a recovery.

In early trading Monday, the Dow Jones industrial average is down 43.07, or 0.5 percent, at 9,327.00. The Standard & Poor’s 500 index is down 5.78, or 0.6 percent, at 1,004.70, while the Nasdaq composite index is down 10.68, or 0.5 percent, at 1,989.57.
