Stocks are sharply higher after the government said the economy grew at a stronger than expected pace during the third quarter

Investors have spent the past couple of months hunting for clues of just how much the economy has recovered. Thursday’s gross domestic product reading gave them the surest sign yet that the economy is on the upswing.

The Commerce Department said the economy grew at an annual pace of 3.5 percent in the third quarter, faster than the 3.3 percent increase predicted by economists polled by Thomson Reuters.

Stocks are gaining after the government issued a mixed trade report

The Commerce Department said the trade deficit declined 3.5 percent to $30.7 billion in August, as imports fell on lower oil demand. Economists expected the deficit to rise to $33 billion, or 3.3 percent from July’s level, which was the highest in six months.

The increase comes after three weeks of declines, and just before the Labor Department’s September unemployment report. Economists forecast that report will show the unemployment rate rose to 9.8 percent from 9.7 percent in August. Most economists expect the rate to top 10 percent by early next year.

Stocks are up sharply in the early going Monday after Abbott Laboratories said it would buy the pharmaceutical business of Belgian chemicals maker Solvay for $6.6 billion and Xerox Corp. agreed to acquire Affiliated Computer Services for about $6.4 billion.
