Stocks are mixed as investors sort through a disappointing reading on the labor market and another batch of earnings reports

The market is trying to rebound a day after a late-session sell off pushed major indexes lower. Lingering concerns over whether investors had been overly optimistic about an economic rebound in pushing the market higher recently fed into Wednesday’s decline.

Overseas markets were tumbling following the U.S. market’s drop Wednesday, and as uncertainty mounted about Chinese stimulus measures aimed at pumping up that country’s economy.

Stocks move higher as earnings season gets underway this week

Major market indicators rose moderately early Monday, getting a boost from European stocks, which jumped after Royal Philips Electronics issued a better-than-expected profit report. A weaker dollar drove oil and other commodities higher, giving energy, material and industrial stocks a lift.

Trading on Monday is expected to be fairly light as much of the country observes the Columbus Day holiday. No major economic reports are scheduled and government bond markets are closed.

Stocks are gaining after the government issued a mixed trade report

The Commerce Department said the trade deficit declined 3.5 percent to $30.7 billion in August, as imports fell on lower oil demand. Economists expected the deficit to rise to $33 billion, or 3.3 percent from July’s level, which was the highest in six months.

Exports of goods and services edged up 0.2 percent, an encouraging sign that the global economy is strengthening. But the decline in imports shows that domestic consumption is still weak.

Stocks turn lower on inflation and industrial production data

Stocks drifted lower early Friday as investors looked for more reasons to keep the market’s summer rally going.

Investors paused after two days of buying as the Labor Department said a measure of inflation was flat in July after a slight increase in June.

Inflation could become a concern down the road as the government continues to spend in an effort to stimulate the economy, though in the near term there has been little worry. A rapid increase in inflation would likely lead to higher interest rates, which could stifle an economic turnaround.
