Stocks move lower after surprising drop in home sales
Stocks have reversed early gains and are slightly lower after a report showing a surprising drop in home sales.
The National Association of Realtors says existing home sales fell 2.7 percent in August compared with a 7.2 percent rise in July. Economists had been expecting a fifth straight increase.
Stocks had been rising in the early going after the Labor Department said the number of newly laid off workers seeking unemployment benefits fell for a third week in a row. Stocks are little changed as investors await Fed decision
Investors are waiting for word from the Federal Reserve before making any big moves in stocks.
Major market indicators barely budged early Wednesday, holding steady at their highest levels in 11 months. The Dow Jones industrial average is less than 200 points away from 10,000, a mark it hasn’t been above since October.
The U.S. central bank is expected to keep its benchmark interest rate at a record low of near zero, but investors are hoping for a clearer indication of when the Fed may raise rates in the future. Investors will also be looking for more clues about the strength of the economy’s recovery in the statement to be released at the conclusion of the Fed’s two-day policy meeting Wednesday afternoon.

However, U.S. stocks got some support from a rebound in overseas markets. In China, the Shanghai market bounced back from a sharp sell-off and the major European indexes were all up about 1 percent.
6 Ways to Play Clean Energy

The Geysers in California supply power for several plants. These power plants emit only excess steam and very minor amounts of gases. In the Mayacamas Mountains, located 72 miles north of San Francisco, naturally occurring steam field reservoirs below the earth’s surface are being harnessed by Calpine to make clean, green, renewable energy for homes and businesses across Northern California.
